OAC Internet Speed

It’s fair to say we are currently experiencing variations to internet speed and the time it takes to connect to a range of different websites.
Our most critical access points are Centra, Janison and Moodle, for both participation in learning activities and preparation of learning activities.

Do you have any recent evidence, experience, occurrence of disruption to either your teaching time or resource preparation that we can use collectively to tackle the issue with the appropriate audience?
Eg:
· Do Centra lessons ever time out, drop out etc due to slow connectivity?
· Is the process for creating Moodle/Janison sites (either trial or live) hindered by internet speed?
· Is your work in research, preparation etc hindered by internet speed?

Centra has been working really well, over 95% success rate, however I don’t use Centra Audio, so I might not be seeing the full picture

Hi Graham > I have just been with a teacher who had to call up Janison and a wiki within a particular site. I gave up counting the seconds it took to load > it was close to 3 minutes or more. The teacher tells me this is pretty much a constant condition

I have been experiencing huge problems with the time it takes for Janison to load and operate. This is especially obvious when building content.

The often excruciatingly slow connection speeds present issues on a daily basis: within Centra- drop outs, extreme frustration when using 'web Safari'. The effect of this is poor and disjointed educational outcomes; in Janison- very unacceptable page refresh times during build and update of pages. The effect of this is significant time delays, poor work-flow outcomes; in conducting research- again, very unacceptable page refresh times during build and update of pages. The effect of this is significant time delays, poor work-flow outcomes and a feeling that it would just be better to stay home and use a system that works!

I use the Internet daily to search for information on the Internet for Senior School students and often wait 2-3 minutes for a site to open up if I can get it to open up. Of late the Internet has been particularly slow this week. When using EBSCO I will click on article and it will often say the server is unavailable and then I have to go back and forward again. This also has been particularly bad this week. The Internet also seems to slow down even more in the afternoons and after 4 can be particularly slow. Centra doesn't seem to be such a problem.

Centra without VOIP has been fairly reliable, but initial setting up is time consuming, or when centra updates occur students have to go through the process all over again. It is slow to load for a lot of schools, and even students with broadband. Some school sites do not get the powerpoint images, or get them after a considerable delay.

On another issue sometimes email takes 1-2 hours to arrive from the sender.
